The lion is the most social of all cats. It lives in a pride or family group of 3-30 individuals that includes males and females. Both sexes defend the pride's territory, though males are more active in doing so. Lionesses care for one another's cubs and hunt cooperatively. When fighting occurs, it's usually to repel intruders or a squabble over food. Known as the king of beasts, the lion makes a regal impression with its amber eyes, muscular build, loud roar and the male's extraordinary mane. The mane makes the male's a body appear larger and more impressive, which helps to attract females at mating time and frightens off rivals. It also can protect the neck region during fights. \ When lionesses hunt together, several may lie in wait downwind of the herd, while another travels around the herd until she is upwind of it. Suddenly, she breaks cover and chases the frightened herd straight toward the ambush.Under favorable conditions, a lion's roar can be heard for five miles or more. Lions roar for a number of reasons, but always to announce their presence and warn rivals to keep out of their territory.
